Kia ora, and welcome to Whispers of Grace, a place for women to be encouraged by God's holy word. I'm your host, julie Colbeth, and I am overjoyed to dig into the Bible with you today. Hello friends, today's psalm is Psalm 20, and it is titled the Assurance of God's Saving Work. It's another psalm written by David, and yet this one's a little bit different because it is the voice of a multitude, or many people on behalf of one person. So it seems like this psalm is from the people of Israel on behalf of their king David, as he's preparing for battle.
Julie:Spurgeon said this about this psalm this verse is a benediction befitting a Sabbath morning and may be the salutation either of a pastor to his people or of a church to its minister. It's kind of a prayer on behalf of someone else. So I thought who can you pray this over as I read it. So I invite you to agree in your soul and to pass on these requests to someone today as I read Psalm 20. May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble. May the name of the God of Jacob defend you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and strengthen you out of Zion. May he remember all of your offerings and accept your burnt sacrifice. May he grant you according to your heart's desire and fulfill all your purpose. We will rejoice in your salvation and in the name of our God we will set up our banners. May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed and he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord, our God. And the verse I'd like to focus on is verse seven. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord, our God. Now, many of us we don't have horses or chariots these days, but I kind of thought to put this into our own mind.
Julie:Some trust in the economy and some in their KiwiSaver, but we will trust in the name of Jehovah-Jireh, our provider. Some trust in presidents and some in prime ministers, but we will trust in our risen Lord. Some trust in themselves and some in their relationships, but we will trust in the lover of our souls. Some trust in jobs and some in their callings, but we will trust in the Alpha and Omega. Some trust in medicine and some in psychology, but we will trust in our great physician, the healer of our souls. Some trust in their intellect and some in their beauty, but we will trust in the all-knowing God. Some trust in their good works and some on their church attendance, but we will trust in the lamb that was slain before the foundations of the earth.
Julie:When all else fails and falls apart and moves away and moves on, jesus is our ever-present help in time of need. Our high priest who still prays for you and for me.
